At the beginning of the 20th century, the concept of 'Geist' was an often discussed topic in German literature. Robert Musil has defined this term as a power out of space and time, which manifests itself in consciousness and will. The article shows how close Musil’s definition was to that of Georg Simmels', and how both connected the discussion of 'Geist' with that of culture and civilization.
