Der "Mythos Galizien". Versuch einer Historisierung

Autoren

The paper examines the historic phenomenon of the fascination of the 'myth' that came from the Habsburg province of Galicia. Based on the definition of 'myth' as a secondary semiological system, which is build upon a primary system by association (Roland Barthes), the myth is analysed as a layering of descriptions and memories of Galicia. Starting with the analysis of some literature of the Enlightenment on the then newly established province the article tries to chronologically stagger and newly interpret the most popular texts that are regarded as (Galician) myths until the end of Word War II. The thesis might in the end well be, that the common and historical relevant of these works of literature results from a perspective of marginality. The stories on multiculturality and poverty stand for the arguments about emancipation and transformation within an agricultural-minted, low industrialized, multi-religious, multi-lingual and poly-technical society, for which classical norms of modernisation have lost their validity.
