Traumreich. Die fantastische Allegorie der Habsburger Monarchie in Alfred Kubins Roman Die andere Seite (1908/09)

Autoren

Clemens Ruthner,  Edmonton, Antwerpen

This contribution focuses on a popular key text of the fin de siècle period in Central Europe, written by the well-known Austrian graphical artist and book illustrator Alfred Kubin (1877-1959). The setting of this fantastic novel is the fictional "Dream Empire" somewhere in Central Asia, founded and ruled by a man who seems to have hypnotic talents. The contribution will summarize the aesthetic characteristics of the novel as well as its syncretistic philosophy and the existing scholarly interpretations within Germanistik. Subsequently, the article will introduce an alternative, "postcolonial" reading of the text as satirical allegory of the late Habsburg Monarchy.
