In the novel Kotlovan by Andrej Platonov, written during the years 1929-1930, a literary polilogue of various voices of utopia takes place – and in that framework also a polemical confrontation with historical materialism as a state philosophy and “victor’s utopia” in the Soviet Union. In this polilogue, the variations of utopian thinking are articulated through the characters alone, without the interference of an authoritative narrative voice: the ideas of the Proletkul’t, the Avant-garde, Nikolaj F. Fedorov’s "Philosophy of the Common Cause", and the official Soviet ideology. The article explores the encounter between various utopian horizons, as well as the disappointed utopian hopes under the characteristics of the erosion and loss of utopia in Kotlovan. In this polilogue of utopias, the utopian voices block and invalidate each other, with the result that it finally reaches a conglomerate of failed utopian visions. In this respect Kotlovan can be seen as a parable on the erosion and loss of utopia after the October Revolution, which is on the one hand typical of the time, given the eschatological retardation and the permanent postponement of the expected communist order, necessarily resulting in a diminution of utopian energy, and on the other hand, a result of Platonov’s personal circumstances.
